Ancient breed still plays part in Connemara life

A SHOW that celebrates and promotes the Connemara Pony, a breed with origins that are believed to go back 2,500 years to the days of the Celtic warriors, drew around 3,000 people to sunny Clifden in County Galway yesterday.

Exhibitors and owners from Ireland and abroad travelled to Connemara to meet, discuss, showcase, sell and buy some of the finest specimens of the distinctive pony, which is noted for its versatility and good temperament.

Set up in 1923 to develop and maintain the unique characteristics of the breed, the Connemara Pony Society is proud of the success that has been achieved.
