Hogget ram best in show at €460
The top price ram was exhibited by Michael Maher of Monivea. The general run of prices for hogget rams ranged €300 to €400.
The show and sale proved to be a very successful day for Clareman Joe Casey, from Ballyvaughan, who scored a double in the championship showing both overall champion hogget ram and reserve in addition to collecting class awards and showing the winning pen of five ewe hoggets which sold to Hugh Reilly, Dromard, Co Sligo, for a record price of €225. Tommy Sice, Athenry, received €150 for his second-prize winners and all the other hoggets made over €105.
Roscommon man William Dolan won the award for the best pen of aged Galway ewes which sold for €190 each to Padraig Geraghty, Glenamaddy. Most of the aged ewes on offer sold for over €100/head. Gerry Nolan won the award for ewe lambs and sold for €180 to Hugo Reilly.
In the factories, prices have stabilised during the week following the fall of up to 16c/kg (6p/lb) at the beginning of the week and there were signs yesterday of a slight recovery with some of the factories increasing their quotes by 3c/kg (1p/lb).
In the marts, lambs have also eased back and are selling at €22 over €/kg to €30 over €/kg for butchers’ lambs, with the factory lambs making €20-€26 over €/kg.
