Familiar voice gone but not forgotten as Show must go on
The voice of the late Sir Major Hugh Walker of Hospital, Co Limerick was familiar to show visitors as he commentated on the riding classes. He was also a very active member and former chairman of the Limerick IFA Horse Committee and devoted a lot of his time to promotion of horse breeding.
The trophy has been presented by Derry O’Donoghue on behalf of the Walker family, in memory of the late Hugh Walker who died during the past year and John Walker, who died recently. It will be awarded at this year’s show to the best turned out entry in the driving classes.
Leo Walsh, chairman, Limerick Show Society said that they appreciated the presentation of the trophy which will keep alive the memory of two great characters, who were part of the event for many years.
Speaking at the launch of this year’s show, he said they are looking forward to another very successful show at their magnificent new venue in the Limerick Race Course at Greenmount, Patrickswell, now regarded as the Show’s home.
In addition to the usual exhibition of livestock, horses, crafts and horticulture, and show jumping, the programme will include the Mounted Garda Unit, Army Display, the All Ireland Hunt Chase Final and Grand Prix, and Irish Kennel Club Open All Breed Dog Show.
Special family attractions will include a live magic extravaganza show, a display of rare breeds of poultry, classic cars and vintage machinery and Carriage Driving Classes.
