Walsh defends EU sugar subsidies

Agriculture Minister Joe Walsh defended the €1.3 billion EU subsidies for sugar and criticised attempts to reform the regime during a meeting of EU agriculture ministers in Brussels yesterday.

Mr Walsh believes the EU is making concessions in the lead-up to World Trade Organisation talks without getting concessions in return. “We want recognition of the reforms we have undertaken and we would like to see parallel commitments from our negotiating partners.”

As an example he said the EU was not getting sufficient recognition for the amount of imports the bloc is taking from the least developed countries, which is greater than from all the other developed countries combined.
