Superquinn promote Irish potatoes

The IFA earlier claimed the group is selling new season Irish potatoes at up to 100/tonne (10c/kg) below the current farmgate price. Growers held an information demonstration outside Superquinn in Carlow.

IFA Potato Committee chairman John Sheridan said the group’s move could seriously undermine the Irish market and put growers’ livelihoods in jeopardy.

Superquinn, however, said it is running a promotion to encourage customers to eat new Irish potatoes. The farmers involved are not subsidising the promotion in any way and are receiving the full price for their produce.
