THE days of the “scrub” ram are over, according to the ICSA, which is urging sheep farmers to spend a little extra money and time in selecting quality rams at the upcoming pedigree sales for breeding.

“There is great potential for sheep farming. However, some farmers will need to improve the quality of the lambs they produce if they are to remain profitable post-2005,” said Mervin Sunderland, vice-chairman of the ICSA sheep committee.

“The cost of a good breeding ram is not a major financial investment and using a scrub ram is merely penny pinching.
