CAP moves backed by 66% of EU

TWO-THIRDS of EU citizens support the recent shift in spending under the Common Agricultural Policy, according to the latest Eurobarometer opinion poll.

In the first such survey to be carried out in the EU of 25 member states, there was strong support for the move from production support towards direct aid to farmers and greater assistance to the rural economy. The survey questioned 25,000 people between November 22 and December 19, 2004.

According to the poll, the main priority for the CAP remains ensuring a stable and adequate income for farmers (36%). The second most important priority is to ensure agricultural products are healthy and safe (30%), and the third (28%) is to promote the respect of the environment.
