Online farming boost

The Department of Agriculture and Food has now improved its website to enable farmers check ‘online’ details of their cattle herd profiles, as well as movements in and out of their herd.

Tommy Cooke, the chairperson of the ICMSA’s Rural Development Committee said that many farmers now realise that ICT is quite easy to use.

Mr Cooke says that he wants national policies put in place to bridge the information and communications technology gulf to rural areas, by training farmers, which could otherwise lose enterprise, jobs and talent. Mr Cooke has also called on Teagasc to provide ICT training courses for farmers.
