Farmers urged to join breed societies

FARMERS have been urged to become involved with cattle breed societies which continue to play a huge role in ensuring top-quality produce for the market.

Macra na Feirme president Colm Markey said there is a significant number of benefits for farmers in having pedigree stock registered with the relevant societies.

It was unfortunate, however, that the societies were sometimes viewed as elitist and many farmers were reluctant to get involved and failed to reap the benefits of the support and expertise on offer.

“Like any organisation, breed societies need new blood and it’s important that young people join up and get actively involved as they have a lot to offer in terms of new ways of doing things,” he said.
