August set for showery weather

Thundery showers, which developed into tornadoes in a few cases, resulted in very uneven rainfall, varying from almost twice the normal level at Cork Airport and Kilkenny to just over half that figure at Belmullet, Co Mayo.

But it was overall it was the wettest August for five to seven years in many places, and the wettest since 1986 in the east of the country.

Hail was recorded at Cork Airport on the 18th, the same day on which Dublin Airport had 32.8mm of rain.
