THE country’s first wood- fired biomass-combined heat and power plant is to be developed at Enniskeane in West Cork at a cost of €8 million.

Independent Biomass Systems, a joint venture between the SWS Group and Grainger Sawmills, is constructing the plant to generate green energy.

It will use sawdust, bark and woodchip with forest 'thinnings' to generate heat for the sawmill's extensive timber-drying operations.
