Letters
Corrie verdict not absurd

Paul Farrell (Letters, Sept 1) writes in praise of the late Rachel Corrie and calls the Israeli court’s verdict on her death ‘absurd but unsurprising’.

Joint World Cup bid

Ireland’s bid to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup would be much more suited to a joint bid with either Scotland or Wales, rather than expecting the GAA to make their grounds available.

No need for ban on football handpass

I have to disagree with Denis Deasy (Letters, Aug 30) when he calls for a ban of the handpass in Gaelic football.

Solution to Assange impasse proposed

Colette Browne’s well-written Opinion piece (Aug 29) is the latest reworking of a now standard model argument against Assange’s position, to which every contributing journalist hones and polishes the reasoning in an attempt to make it a little more convincing.

US human rights record under fire

Colette Browne (Aug 28) makes some very valid points which would be very reasonable if we were dealing with people (governments) of honesty or integrity.

Sincere thank you

We wish to thank the unexpectedly large number of people who turned out for the RIC/DMP Commemoration in Glasnevin.

Wrong assumption

Peter Mulvany (Letters, Aug 28) in response to my letter in which I opposed the retired Garda commemoration for members of the Royal Irish Constabulary, said “there are many Irish citizens who have a British dimension to their Irishness and vice versa; and no doubt there are members of the Garda who may have family links with the former RIC who feel it is their duty to remember the fallen”.

Rachel Corrie was a leading light in fight against hunger

On Tuesday last, Rachel Corrie’s family sat in an Israeli civil court to hear it deliver an absurd but unsurprising verdict on Israel’s own army. Rachel’s name is linked with peaceful courage: especially her own, but also that of a group of Irish people.
