I recently learned in the Irish Examiner of the threats made to members of An Garda Siochana stationed in Carbury, Co. Kildare, and to their families. It was news to me, but hardly surprising, considering the criminal fraternity are well aware of politicians’ lack of interest in the welfare of members of the force. Politicians have denuded the force of manpower, transport and finance for years.

It seems strange to me that the reference to marriage in our Constitution, which was drafted by Eamon De Valera and regarded worldwide as a masterpiece, should now be radically redefined with the full approval of the Fianna Fáil party leadership.

I have noticed a large number of posters proclaiming concern for the rights for children. 

Nowadays, there are new notions about marriage: ie allowing people of the same sex to form a union and marry. 

When watching John Waters on TV, debating the same-sex marriage referendum, I was struck by his resemblance to Jesus Christ, bearded and with long, flowing hair.

The Government’s spring statement, and Finance Minister Michael Noonan’s pledge to lure thousands of emigrants home, via more favourable tax measures, were as welcome as the flowers in May. Or would be, if either had an iota of credibility!

In the debate on same sex marriage there is one issue that I have not heard of. 

If David Cameron had real courage and conviction he would call an ‘in-out’ referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union immediately.

I wonder is it the same company that provided the array of flags to be burnt in 1945 by Trinity and UCD students (Ryle Dwyer, May 7 ) that provides the array of flags that seem to be available suspiciously quickly across the Muslim world to be burnt as and when they are told to take offence at something.

Most citizens of Ireland are lucky, in that other than those living in Dublin, the size of their towns or cities does not deprive them of access to the countryside, or its way of life.
