I was glad to read M O’Flynn’s letter (Irish Examiner, August 7) regarding the heroic Fenian Jeremiah Ó Donnabháin Rossa, and those who followed in his footsteps, from the men of Easter Week to today’s republicans.

I hope no-one will accuse Alison O’Connor (Irish Examiner, August 7) of discrimination against the disabled, due to her advocacy of the right to end a pregnancy in cases where the child will be born disabled.

I think the port of Calais is 32 miles from Dover. The migrants at Calais are relentlessly testing the boundaries (literally) of the Channel Tunnel and the Port of Calais.

The proposal to create unique patient identity numbers for everyone who engages with health services, either public or private, seems like another great idea to squander our money. Our PPS numbers are already unique identifiers.

In response to Noel Harrington’s letter on Aug 5, which justified the 1916 Rising on the basis that Redmond’s Home Rule project was defunct after the rearrangement of the British Government into a National Coalition in 1915, it is an often-heard argument which is totally untrue.

Re the recent article in the Irish Examiner, by Niamh Horan, under the heading “We need to start talking about Aids here again”, I found it to be constructive, well-balanced and helpful, as I am certain it was to other readers.

There is surely irony in Sinn Fein’s Senator David Cullinane accusing the Taoiseach of ‘breathtaking arrogance’ for wanting to remain in power for another 10 years, when his own leader, Gerry Adams, has led the Provisional movement, with no dissent, since 1983.

I respond to John Fitzgerald’s letter from 6 August regarding his flawed attempt to compare the deliberately illegal and intentional killing of endangered big game in Africa to highly regulated, transparent, and observable hare coursing in rural Ireland.

At a time when criticism of anonymous posters on social media is regularly in the news, there is nobody willing to put their name to the statement released by the Cork County Board on Monday which has again made Cork GAA the laughing stock of the country. 

“The only way we can make profits is by not doing the things we should do to make the railways better.”
