An anachronism that revives the dark ages
An anachronism that revives the dark ages
NEXT year we will mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising, but 2016 will also mark the centenary of an even more contentious event — if we can consider such a possibility.

A victory for citizens over big business - The battle against tobacco
A victory for citizens over big business - The battle against tobacco

YESTERDAY’S preliminary ruling, usually a first step towards complete vindication, by the European Court of Justice, supporting Government intentions to introduce plain packaging for tobacco products is very welcome — all the more so as it seems rulings against conglomerates, intended to protect ordinary citizens, are becoming as scarce as turkey teeth. The court’s advocate general said the standardisation of labelling and packaging is a “proportionate” measure and that it challenges the “coolness” of current packaging.

Be happy - Celebrating Christmas
Be happy - Celebrating Christmas
BE KIND, be generous, be calm, be thoughtful, be loving, be warm, be welcoming, be patient, be helpful, be attentive, be open, be modest, be a good friend and a good neighbour, be good a father and be a good mother, be a good son or a good daughter, be a good brother or a good sister; be, if you can at all, happy and content because Christmas comes but once a year and each one should be memorable. Proving that virtue is its own reward.

An anachronism in the digital age - Oireachtas Christmas cards
An anachronism in the digital age - Oireachtas Christmas cards

THE minor controversy surrounding Oireachtas members use of government facilities to print and deliver documents promoting their achievements is as predictable as it is valid. This year, as an election looms, is no exception.

A chance to allay fish farm fears - Galway Bay salmon plan dropped
A chance to allay fish farm fears - Galway Bay salmon plan dropped

THE decision by Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) to withdraw its licence application for a 15,000-tonne salmon farm in Galway Bay — it would have been the biggest in Europe — is to be welcomed. That those who opposed the mega project and those who supported it welcomed the decision, though for very different reasons, raises questions even at the very moment the project has been shelved.

Mask slips to show cancer at heart of SF - Defending Adams’ defence
IF there are none so blind as those who will not see then Sinn Féin’s Oireachtas members and supporters better start learning braille.

Safer roads - Road deaths reduced
Safer roads - Road deaths reduced
IT is terribly sad that on the day figures showed a 19% reduction in road deaths for the year, Geraldine Clancy, 58, and her daughter Louise, 22, were killed in a road collision in north Cork. Yesterday’s tragedy underlines though, the almost random nature of death on our roads and the heartbreak it brings to families and friends of the victims.

Sport losing capacity to inspire us all - Fifa corruption
Sport losing capacity to inspire us all - Fifa corruption

We express our best instincts and hopes — the worst too — through many mediums but few represent the human spirit and human frailty as brightly or as loudly as sport.

A Spanish lesson - Political map redrawn
A Spanish lesson - Political map redrawn

Spain’s general election has created circumstances that may have a particular relevance to us over the coming months. Essentially, the country’s political map was redrawn and the monopoly of the old, established parties has been, for the moment at least, sidelined.

We are obliged to speak out - Domestic violence
We are obliged to speak out - Domestic violence
Shaneda Daly’s description today of sharing Christmas dinner with a father who routinely abused her, raping her every Christmas Day, is a stomach-churning reminder of the impact this evil violence has on an individual.
