I WAS walking the dog along the canal bank when I saw something that I always find exciting, however often it happens. A kingfisher burst out of a bank-side bush and headed off low over the water — an electric blue streak, wings beating so fast they were a blur.

I WAS at our local radio station last week, contributing to a programme on National Tree Week.

I WAS UP at the Coronation Plantation in Co Wicklow recently. For anyone who doesn’t know the area, it’s in the valley of the upper Liffey to the west of the Sally Gap and it doesn’t look in the least bit like a plantation.

WORK found me in Co Wicklow for a couple of days recently and I was surprised by the number of deer I saw.
