X-Sense XC0C-SR and SD11 review: Solid home safety, but is it smart enough?
Bringing visibility to the invisible: How X-Sense tackles the silent threats of smoke and CO. Picture: X-Sense.
When it comes to home safety, there is no room for error. Smoke and carbon monoxide are two of the most dangerous threats because you often cannot see or smell them until it is too late. Having reliable detectors is a fundamental part of looking after your property and your family. Lately, the real game changer has been the rise of Wi-Fi-connected devices. Being able to get a notification on your phone while you are at work or on holiday is a huge benefit, as it means you are alerted to a problem even if you aren't there to hear the siren.

Built from fire-retardant ABS plastic, the SD11 smoke alarm is easy to mount on either a wall or a ceiling. The kit includes a mounting backing and offers a choice between standard screws and a magnetic, self-adhesive plate.
The XC0C-SR carbon monoxide detector is compact and can sit on a bedside table or be mounted to a wall using the provided screws. Both devices are designed to be simple and unobtrusive.

The features of these two devices are quite different, given what they are meant to do. The SD11 is a set-and-forget type of device. It uses a 10-year lithium battery, so you do not have to worry about the annoying midnight chirping that happens when batteries run low. It also uses a photoelectric sensor, which is great for reducing false alarms from steam or cooking.
The XC0C-SR has a clear LCD screen that displays real-time CO levels. I found the peak-level memory very useful, as it allows you to see the highest recorded reading. It also has a tri-colour LED that changes colour to indicate whether the device is working correctly or has a fault.
It runs on AA batteries, which are easy to replace, though you will need to swap them every few years. Both devices are designed with a 10-year lifespan, offering long-term durability before they eventually reach the end of their functional life.
These alarms are perfect for specific scenarios. Because the XC0C-SR is so portable, it is a brilliant companion for anyone who travels frequently or manages Airbnbs and holiday lets. It provides peace of mind where you might not be able to guarantee the safety of the existing equipment. The SD11 is a great, budget-friendly choice for rental flats or older homes where you just need a reliable, certified alarm installed in the hallway or living room.
If you are looking for basic, reliable, and affordable protection, these are a great value. The SD11 is especially good because of the long-life battery. However, if you are like me and want total peace of mind through your smartphone, these might disappoint. Since neither of these models offers Wi-Fi connectivity, you won't get those remote alerts. For anyone who needs that specific functionality, I would recommend looking at the X-Sense XCOC-IR and the XS01-M instead, as they work with the X-Sense app.
