For many of us, our TVs are smart enough, but not all are made equal. Sony, Samsung and LG offer excellent built-in software that works seamlessly. Still, other brands' apps are slow, with a clunky interface and sub-standard features. This is one of the reasons why a streaming box is often preferred. If you’ve got a mishmash of brands in your home, then using a streaming stick or unit on all TVs is less confusing.
I’ve been testing the second generation of Amazon's Fire TV 4K Max, and it’s a powerhouse with an attractive price point. Boasting a robust set of features, from its powerful processor to immersive audio and art gallery capabilities, this streaming stick aims to be the pinnacle of home entertainment.

At the heart of the Fire TV 4K Max lies its most formidable feature — a powerful processor that transforms your streaming experience. The lightning-fast app starts, and fluid navigation characterises its performance, ensuring that you spend more time enjoying your content and less time waiting for it to load. The device's responsiveness sets a new standard for streaming sticks, making transitions between apps and menus a breeze.
The Max has impressive 4K Ultra HD support and compatibility with Dolby Vision and HDR10+. You can set up Alexa speakers to work directly with the Max or Bluetooth speakers. If the audio is not in sync with the latter, an advanced setting called AV Sync Tuning will allow you to adjust the delay to synchronise the audio and video.
Many more devices have been released with the latest WiFi 6E, and it’s good to see it here. Of course, you will need a compatible WiFi router to gain its full potential, but eventually, these will be the common standard.

The Fire TV 4K Max comes with the Fire TV Ambient Experience. Turn your living space into an art gallery with over 2,000 museum-quality art and photography pieces. This innovative feature adds a touch of sophistication to your home, offering a dynamic visual experience even when you're not actively streaming content.
The Fire TV 4K Max extends its capabilities beyond entertainment, seamlessly integrating with your smart home. Control compatible devices such as cameras and lights effortlessly. With the Alexa Voice Remote Enhanced, a simple voice command allows you to check the weather, dim the lights, or perform various tasks, expanding the Fire TV 4K Max's role as a central hub for your smart home.

The Max has an adequate 16 GB of storage, double that of its predecessor. After I installed all of my usual apps, I still have over 9GB of storage available for more apps, games, and content without worrying about running out of space. There are a to of apps to download, and I love that I can install my VPN app. You can also create user profiles, which is great if you have children and need to apply parental controls.
You can install all of your favourite streaming apps and so much more to stream thousands of films and TV episodes from popular platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+. The streaming stick's powerful processor also delivers fluid gameplay and fast-rendering graphics, making it a viable option for gaming enthusiasts seeking a versatile entertainment device.
The Fire TV 4K Max comes bundled with the Alexa Voice Remote Enhanced. This upgraded remote includes voice control for hands-free navigation, a Recents button for quick access to recent content, and dedicated channel buttons to streamline live TV surfing. The remote is not just a tool; it's an integral part of the enhanced user experience.
The Fire TV 4K Max has a powerful processor, Wi-Fi 6E support, art gallery capabilities, smart home integration, and ample storage. It offers a comprehensive solution for those seeking a premium streaming experience and is a great alternative to slow and clunky software often found on cheaper TVs.
