Apple has been pushing gaming on their hardware and software, and the recent release of the iPhone 15 with a USB-C port opens up a host of gaming peripherals that were previously only available to Android devices. One of the best I tried so far is a new controller from GameSir called the G8 Galileo. The G8 isn’t exclusive to the iPhone, and I’ve been testing on other devices, including the new Redmagic 9 Pro, one of the first to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

The G8 is a cutting-edge device that isn't just a controller that elevates the mobile gaming experience to the next level. GameSir drew inspiration from the spirit of exploration embodied by Galileo. With features like a built-in wired Type-C port, Hall Effect Sticks, Hall Effect Analog Triggers, ABXY and Back Buttons, and pass-through charging, the G8 Galileo aims to be the ultimate gateway for gamers seeking enhanced control and performance.

Design

Designed with universal compatibility, the G8 features an extendable mechanism with sufficient space to accommodate a wide range of phones. It has an extendable bridge that can be adjusted from 110 to 185mm in length and enough back room (13 mm or less in depth) to hold various phone types, including Android and the iPhone 15 series. For mobile gamers looking for flexibility, it's the ideal option because it guarantees a smooth gaming experience. I did most of my testing using an iPhone 15 Pro Max and Redmagic 9 Pro with no issues. This adaptability ensures a seamless gaming experience for mobile gamers with varying devices, eliminating the need for multiple controllers for different phones.

The joysticks are offset, similar to an Xbox controller, and include the Y, B, A, and X buttons. You also get two back buttons and the obligatory top triggers and buttons.

The G8 has laser-engraved texture grips to ensure a secure and comfortable hold, while the high-saturation fluorescent ink buttons add a vibrant, eye-catching touch. The controller offers interchangeable magnetic detachable faceplates and customisable stick caps for a personalised touch.

The G8 also includes a USB-C port for pass-through charging and a 3.5mm jack for wired headphones, which worked great on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Console-like comfort and precision

I love my Steam Deck for its ergonomics, and while the layout of the G8 is a little different, I find it even more comfortable. The G8 has console-sized sticks and buttons, offering incredible comfort during extended gaming sessions. The ergonomic design ensures a comfortable grip, reminiscent of holding a console controller. The placement of controls ensures quick and easy access to buttons, enhancing the gaming experience. Whether navigating treacherous terrains or executing precise shots, the G8 assures expert precision and excellent comfort.

Pass-through charging

One of the standout features of the G8 is its movable Type-C port, which means you can continue to game while powering your phone with a power bank or charger. Adding pass-through charging is a thoughtful solution to the perennial issue of drained controllers disrupting the gaming flow.

While the pass-through charging is an excellent feature, it doesn’t provide full charging speeds. I only managed to get 7.6W and 14.5W on the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Redmagic 9 Pro, respectively. While these speeds are well shy of these phones' maximum charging rates, it was enough to keep them gaming without losing charge.

Precision control

The G8 Galileo uses Hall Effect sensing sticks for precise pinpoint control and wear-free parts. This technology offers the precision and durability demanded by mobile gamers. The anti-friction glide rings enhance stick control, reducing wear and extending usage time. The precision-tuned Hall Effect analogue triggers deliver smoothness and responsiveness, providing a competitive advantage in any game. A quick switch to Hair Trigger Mode is available for FPS and action gamers by holding the M+LT/RT buttons.

On-the-fly mapping for Android

Catering to pro-level gaming, the G8 has two additional back buttons for on-the-fly mapping, allowing gamers to map in-game actions instantly. The GameSir App takes customisation to the next level with exclusive Android system support, so sadly, there’s no support for iOS users. Gamers can create personalised controller profiles by mapping buttons, fine-tuning the D-pad diagonals, and adjusting sticks and trigger zones. It is even possible to set a 0 dead zone through the app. Gamers can immerse themselves in exclusive impulse triggers for all their games. The software also provides the convenience of updating firmware for the controller instantly.

I’m not sure why the iPhone gets no love here, but hopefully, it will in the future. As a result, unless the game you’re playing natively supports a controller, it won’t work with the G8 on the iPhone 15. It supports all controller-supported IOS games such as Genshin Impact, Resident Evil 4, COD Mobile, Soul Knight, Diablo Immortal, Minecraft, Asphalt 9: Legends, etc.

Verdict

The GameSir G8 Galileo Mobile Gaming Controller is the best I’ve tried and is highly recommended for iPhone 15 and Android users. I hope GameSir updates its app to include the G8 to enhance its features for iPhone 15 gamers further. With its innovative features, adaptable design, and commitment to user customisation, the G8 Galileo is a standout choice for mobile gamers seeking a comprehensive and enhanced gaming experience.

The GameSir G8 Galileo Mobile Controller is now available for €95 from Amazon UK, Amazon.co.uk and the GameSir official website.
