Netflix will produce a $50 million monster movie from the director of The Host

Netflix is all over the place right now - whether its with award winning drama series like House of Cards, Marvel adaptations like Jessica Jones or Oscar worthy movies like Beasts of No Nation. So it’s about time they made a monster flick.

Netflix will produce a $50 million monster movie from the director of The Host

And they’re doing just that, but this isn’t your regular smash em up. They’ve joined up with none other than Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho and will be bringing a large budget of $50 million to the table.

He’s the fellow behind The Host and recently made his English language debut with the well received Snowpiercer. His new project will be called Okja and has been described as a different kind of monster movie. Here’s what the filmmaker had to say:

"The film is about a warm friendship between a country girl and a brute with stories. To me, the crazy world surrounding Okja and the girl looks more like a monster. I want to depict the two characters’ bizarre journey and adventure across the tough world in an original fashion."

Sounds different, which is nver a bad thing. And this is definitely happening, with Brad Pitt’s Plan B also shoring up the score and actors already signed on including Jake Gyllenhaal, Tilda Swinton, Billy Nighy and Kelly Macdonald.

Sounds great - and it’s yet another reason why Netflix is picking up so many subscribers with totally unique content that’s no beholden to studios.

Okja will shoot in 2016 for a 2017 release.
