Rainbow Six's Angela Bassett learned about mo cap from Call of Duty videos

Bassett revealed at a Rainbow Six Siege preview event that mo cap, or motion capture, hadn’t even been a term that she was familiar with. She has some animation work under her belt where she has lent her voice to performances, but has never gone through the process of having her likeness captured.

She said that she took a look at Kevin Spacey’s appearance (in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare) “just to see what it looked like with an actor in it,” rather than something that’s been animated. These trailers helped her “get an idea of what it was.”

Bassett soon learned what the process entailed, revealing that at the start she had 12 dots on her face, and it only got bigger from there. She described it as a step-by-step process, which entailed recording a number of different scenarios, wearing the suit, matching motions to the dialogue, and so on.

Bassett’s motion capture and vocal work will be featured in Rainbow Six Siege where she plays Six. She said that she was interested in the role because Six was one of “the first female directors roles of this sort in the game industry,” and a “strong, resilient, take charge kind of character.”

Rainbow Six Siege will be released on December 1st. Then we will get to see if Spacey’s teachings-by-proxy had the desired impact.
