Apple says is cleaning up its iOS App store after a malicious code was added to hundreds of popular Chinese iPhone and iPad applications in the first large scale attack on the mobile software outlet.

The code reportedly enabled hackers to steal private data. The company disclosed the effort after several cyber security firms reported finding a malicious programme dubbed XcodeGhost.

This is the first time a large number of malicious programmes made their way into the Apple’s market place. The company said the hackers embedded the malicious code in the Apps by convincing developers to use a counterfeit version of Apple’s software for creating Apps known as Xcode.
