River Song is back in Doctor Who!

Let's forget for a moment all of the brain-warping things which have happened between the Doctor and Alex Kingston's River- they can do pretty much whatever they like in this show. For the Christmas special it will be the first time she meets the Doctor's latest body, the very leathery Peter Capaldi. There will probably be some giggles around that, especially considering the two are married in some of the many timelines.

A brief plot synopsis for the upcoming special has also been released:

"It’s Christmas Day in the future and the TARDIS is parked on a snowy village street, covered in icicles, awaiting its next adventure. Time traveller River Song meets her husband’s new incarnation, in the form of Peter Capaldi, for the first time this Christmas."

That's not a lot to go on but considering these Christmas episodes are generally divorced from the main series that doesn't really matter.

Shooting for the new episode is set to start very soon and it will be broadcast on Christmas day 2015.
