The 61 year old was a famously prolific worker, with 11 films he scored once coming out in a single calendar year. His output has slowed down a bit recently, particularly in the wake of 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man. 2015 would have seen him back in the public eye with at least three major scores for movies like Antoine Fuqua's Southpaw and miner-drama The 33.
He had also just reteamed with Jean-Jacques Annaud for a new movie after their work on The Name of the Rose and Enemy at the Gates. Wolf Totem is based on a semi-autobiographical Chinese book which is about a student who travels to Inner Mongolia to educate the locals.
