The 61 year old was a famously prolific worker, with 11 films he scored once coming out in a single calendar year. His output has slowed down a bit recently, particularly in the wake of 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man. 2015 would have seen him back in the public eye with at least three major scores for movies like Antoine Fuqua's Southpaw and miner-drama The 33.

He had also just reteamed with Jean-Jacques Annaud for a new movie after their work on The Name of the Rose and Enemy at the Gates. Wolf Totem is based on a semi-autobiographical Chinese book which is about a student who travels to Inner Mongolia to educate the locals. There be starts to learn about their culture and traditions and to question his own.

The film leans heavily on one element of the book, as the student becomes enthralled with the wolves which populate the region. Here's the trailer for Wolf Totem, which features music by James Horner.

It's definitely a score by James Horner, with all the sweeping notes we've come to expect. The film itself took a long time to get into production and then shot for almost a year in the wilds of Mongolia on a budget of $40 million. That's a huge budget to give to a Western filmmaker like the French Annaud but it was perceived that an outside could handle the political undertones of the script with more objectivity than a local.

And it seems to have worked, with the film already grossing $122 million worldwide, mostly in China and France. It was mostly praised for its visuals, action and use of 3D. If you want to hear some more of the soundtrack, check out this link- though it's not an official upload.

Wolf Totem, complete with scoring by James Horner, will be in cinemas in late 2015.
