Watch an AI learn how to play Super Mario World

How good do you think you are at Super Mario World? Do you think you could defeat this AI, which taught itself how to play through the Donut Plains 1 level of the SNES game?

Seth Bling created the AI program, which he called MarI/O. He showcases the AI playing the level efficiently before breaking down how MarI/O learned how to play the game and complete the level.

The AI’s final form is quite impressive, flying through the level with ease. Those who crave high scores won’t be too happy with how many points were left behind.

But MarI/O wasn’t always so adept at the game. Bling shows off the first iteration of the AI, which simply stands still. Over time, it learns that right is the best direction to go, how to avoid enemies, and how to navigate the terrain.

Perhaps this AI could teach you a thing or two about playing Super Mario World.
