Watch a robot learn how to wield a samurai sword

We thought we were pretty good at Fruit Ninja. Then we saw this robot in action.

Master swordsman Isao Machii teaches the Motoman-MH24 how to use a sword like a modern-day samurai. He teaches it basic techniques like diagonal cuts and then sees just how accurate it is when it’s turned against fruit. The bot and Machii then team up to complete the “thousand cuts.”

In each and every case, the robot manages to closely replicate the movements of the modern-day samurai.

The team first analysed Machii’s sword technique in 3D before replicating it with the robot.

Anyone nervous about the prospect of teaching robots how to use swords may be reassured by the knowledge that the Motoman-MH24 is an industrial bot that’s sometimes used in the medical field. At least if it does turn against humanity, it might fix you up too.
