Valve makes trio of announcements at GDC

No, we’re not going to go there…Valve had plenty to talk about at Game Developers Conference, including its overdue Steam Machines, a new streaming box, and the Source 2 engine.

Valve makes trio of announcements at GDC

Valve says that its range of Steam Machines will launch this fall. Of course, this time last year, Valve announced its partners, showed off some of the machines in the flesh, and said that they would be out during the Holidays. Thankfully, another partner, CyberPowerPC, announced a range of Steam Machines that will be released later this year, so we’re a little more confident that this timeline could be accurate. One of the things that delayed the release of the Steam Machines, it seems, was the controller. Valve announced that the controller will be released in the U.S. in November and will cost $50. It will have both touch and motion capabilities. And yes, those haptic pads are still present and correct. The controller will launch alongside a new streaming box called Steam Link. This is capable of broadcasting games from your PC to your TV, so you’re no longer confined to your PC’s setup if you want to play games. Steam Link will apparently offer "low latency" streaming of Steam games in 1080p resolution at 60 Hz. It will retail for $50.In other exciting news, Valve announced Source 2, the successor to its original Source engine, which has been in use since 2004. Source 2 will be available to content creators for free for both professional developers and players who want to “participate in the creation and development of their favourite games.”We’ve long-heard that Source 2 was in the works, so it’s great to hear an official announcement. Perhaps we will soon hear how Valve is progressing with other titles that it is said to be working on.In Short: Valve announced a range of new products and services at Game Developers Conference, including more Steam Machine details, Steam Link, and Source 2.
