Production in manufacturing industries increased by more than 7% from December 2024 to February 2025 when compared with the previous three-month period, new figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show, which was underpinned by differences in performance between the highly globalised modern sector and the traditional sector.

Monthly production in manufacturing industries rose by 12.5% between January and February 2025, the CSO found, while on an annual basis, production in this sector was 19.7% higher in the three months to February when compared with the same period last year.

The highly globalised modern sector, which includes the chemical, pharmaceutical, and computer and electronic sectors, experienced a growth of over 22% in industrial production from December to February 2025, when compared with the same period one year ago. In contrast, the traditional sector declined by 0.9% over the same three-month period.

From December to February 2025, turnover in manufacturing industries was up by 11.6% when compared with the previous three-month period.

"In general, it should be noted that the results presented in this release reflect contract manufacturing activity in the multinational sectors," said CSO statistician Colin Cotter.

The CSO added that it recommends taking a longer-term view of the indices due to the variability that can occur within the given months of a quarter.
