Danish home furniture retailer Jysk said it will continue to expand across Ireland in the new year, with the opening of its new head office and five new stores scheduled for for 2025.

Country Director for the company's Ireland and UK business, Roni Tuominen has said the retailer will continue to grow its presence in Ireland in the next few years.

“It has been a very successful start to the year for Jysk in Ireland and we are constantly looking to expand," Mr Tuominen told the Irish Examiner.

"This year alone, we have five sites ready and may even have more by the end of the year."

"There are still a lot of cities and towns across Ireland where we are considering new stores. Now its just about finding the right locations and landlords to get these things in action."

"There are also cities like Dublin where we have four stores already. I strongly believe that we can double or even triple that number. It all just comes down to finding the right sites and landlords to make that happen. Jysk is very much looking to expand and will continue to do so in the next two or three years."

So far, Jysk has announced new stores in Blackpool in Cork, Tullamore, Co Offaly and Swords in Dublin, with two more store openings in the pipeline for later in the year.

In addition, the retailer will open a new head office in Park West Business Park, with the new site and stores increasing the company’s employment in Ireland to almost 350 staff.

The new head office in Park West Business Park has seen an investment of €250,000 and will house up to 50 head office employees across all departments. The retailer said that it was in addition to its 8,000 sq dark store, which opened in November to help reduce customer delivery times to between two and eight days. It also noted that delivery times will be improved "even further" in 2025.

This is the second head office move by Jysk since it launched in Ireland to "keep up with the company’s growth in this market."

Speaking on the wider market, Mr Tuominen noted that it has already seen strong development in the first four months of its fiscal year.

"All of our categories are up. Indoor furniture in particular remains very popular. I believe it is very much the Scandinavian model and affordable prices that are attracting customers."

The Country Director also noted that when looking at their figures, the appetite for home improvements remains as strong as ever.

In November 2024, Jysk announced an annual turnover of €120m for Ireland and the UK, up 13.6% on the previous year. The furniture retailer also said it achieved double-digit growth in sales and customer numbers in the first quarter compared to last year.

"When you look at the market overall, Jysk is outperforming it. So the trends we are seeing are very positive."

Jysk is not the only furniture retailer to take an interest in Ireland, however, with Swedish retail giant Ikea also announcing significant expansion plans. Last year saw the retailer open its fifth plan and order point in Ireland, with sites now spread across Cork, Dublin, Carlow, Naas and Drogheda, which is in addition to its store in Ballymun.

However, Mr Tuominen said he is not too concerned by rivals, adding: "Of course we follow our competitors with great interest to see what they are doing, but it should also be noted that Jysk has 3,500 stores across Europe. Our strategy has always been to get as close as possible to our customers.

"So I am not too concerned. We have our own goals and our own strategy, and we will be following that into the new year and beyond."
