The EBS is to stop paying its staff Christmas bonuses and instead will offer its employees interest-free loans to compensate.

The bonus had been made to staff in the form of a "13th month" payment, but the building society told its employees yesterday that it was to be stopped because of AIB rules, the bank which merged with the ESB on July 1, 2011.
