The European Union has said it hopes to impose new taxes on financial institutions.

The European Parliament meeting in Strasbourg this morning was told that the time has come for the sector to pay its fair share like everyone else.

There are fears the proposed transaction taxes will be passed on to the public.

Taxation Commissioner Algirdas Semeta says banks, brokers and providers of financial services will pay more if the plan gets approval.
