The value of Irish shares increased by 2.1% today, as the ISEQ index shot up 56.87 points to 2,760.73.

The value of Irish shares increased by 2.1% today, as the ISEQ index shot up 56.87 points to 2,760.73.

Irish Life and Permanent led the way in the financial sector, climbing 10c to €1.55. There was little movement elsewhere, with Allied Irish Banks up 1c to 78c and Bank of Ireland inching down 1c to 76c.

The construction sector performed well. CRH shot up 47c to €12.75. Kingspan was 24c better off on €5.69, and Grafton improved 14c to €2.83.

Paddy Power enjoyed the biggest gain of the day, rocketing 71c to €28.10. Tullow Oil, which gained 47c to €15.10, DCC (up 48c to €20.24) and Smurfit Kappa (up 45c to €7.20) also enjoyed huge gains.

Dragon Oil (up 19c to €5.26) and Ryanair (up 12c to €3.95) also did well.

Irish Continental Group (down 15c to €14.55) and Kerry Group (down 12c to €25.80) were the only losses of significance.
