Starbucks profits soar

Coffee chain Starbucks has reported an eight-fold increase in profit for the first quarter of the year driven by cost-cutting and strong growth in US revenues.

Starbucks, which recently closed five Irish outlets as part of a worldwide cull of unprofitable outlets, recorded a profit of $217m (€161.8m) on sales of $2.3bn (€1.72bn).
