Almost one in every six defined benefit pension schemes are likely to be wound up due to funding difficulties - leaving employees at the risk of losing their retirement nest eggs.

A survey of pension funds by consulting firm Mercer found half of all defined benefit schemes fall short of minimum legal funding standards and have had to submit recovery plans to the Pensions Board.
