The level of new mortgage lending to homeowners has fallen for the seventh consecutive month, according to new figures from the Central Bank.

Overall the amount of mortgage debt now outstanding has grown by just a fifth of 1% in the past 12 months, reflecting both a drop in demand from homebuyers and a tightening of lending rules by banks.
