The Bank of England launched its biggest hiring spree since the stock market crash in the UK of 1987 to cope with new responsibilities amid the financial crisis, it emerged today.

The central bank’s annual report revealed it upped its total workforce by 6%, with 1,666 staff on permanent contracts at the end of February against 1,579 a year earlier.
