Debenhams reports lower sales

British department store Debenhams today said half-year sales had declined 3.6% and warned of tough trading ahead.

But the group, which has 153 stores in the UK and Ireland, said strong sales of its designerwear and own bought ranges would help push profits ahead of last year.
