Euro hits near parity with pound

The euro's relentless rise towards parity with the pound picked up pace today after it climbed to another record high against sterling.

The latest rise saw the euro worth worth some 0.9787 pounds amid expectations for European interest rates to remain higher than in the UK for some time yet as the Bank of England slashes the cost of borrowing.
