The ISEQ index of Irish shares dropped 89 points (3%) by 5.30pm to 2,431.59.
The majority of the financials were down, AIB fell 8c to €1.76, with Anglo Irish Bank down 7c to 32c. Bank of Ireland lost 10c off its share price and Irish Life and Permanent gained a modest 1c to €1.47.
