The FTSE 100 Index joined a global sell-off today as deflation and recession fears combined to rattle world markets.

London’s slide started yesterday after US consumer prices for October showed a record fall and investors worried about a prolonged global recession. The Footsie closed 5% lower last night and was down another 2% or 88.5 points at 3917.2 by mid-morning.
