Volatility swept through Wall Street today as investors awaited details of the US government’s plan to buy $700bn (€473bn) in banks’ mortgage debt.

Stocks fell sharply, taking the Dow Jones industrials down more than 200 points, while investors sought safety in hard assets such as oil, which shot up more than $11 a barrel.
