Soaring petrol prices have leapt up the political agenda this year as households struggle to cope with the rising cost of living.

The furore has already forced Chancellor Alistair Darling to shelve a fuel duty hike planned for October in a bid to prevent the Government falling even further in the popularity stakes with voters.
