Fears over the US financial sector saw London’s FTSE 100 Index plunge more than 2.7% today, putting it on course for its lowest close since October 2005.

The Footsie shed more than 147 points at one stage as investors headed for the exit, putting paid to the brief rebound seen by blue chips yesterday.
