The FTSE 100 Index slipped beneath the 6,000 barrier today as world markets reacted to fears that the US economy is heading for recession.

The latest turmoil for investors was sparked yesterday after the world’s biggest bank, Citigroup, unveiled a £5bn (€3.4bn) fourth-quarter loss and new figures showed US shoppers cut back sharply on spending in December.
