Disabled workers await crucial UK job news

Plans for the future of thousands of disabled workers employed in scores of factories across the UK will be revealed today.

Remploy said its proposals will guarantee that no disabled worker will be made compulsorily redundant.

The firm had planned to close or merge 43 of its plants with the loss of 2,500 jobs under plans to spend more money creating work in “mainstream” employment.

They believe a number of factories on the original list will be removed but there will still be plans to close some of the sites.

A row was narrowly averted at the Labour Party annual conference when Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain announced that he would study the closure plans before they went ahead.

Remploy said yesterday that it will be submitting to the Government a “fully costed, detailed proposal on modernising the organisation”.
