There has been an seven-fold increase in the number of cases where firms are suspected of collapsing with large tax debts but then resuming to trade under a different name - known as "phoenix syndrome".

The Revenue Commissioners examine any suspected cases of this, as well as instances where the same person or people control a number of businesses which systematically build up tax debts before ceasing to trade.
