Sheep farmers protest over sale of imported meat

About 100 sheep farmers have staged a protest outside a supermarket on Dublin's Grafton Street at the chain's sale of lamb from New Zealand.

The Irish Farmers' Association says Marks and Spencer are "decimating" Irish lamb producers by stocking the imported meat.

The IFA President Padraig Walshe said producers are losing up to €12 per lamb - and the Irish sheep farming sector is under threat.

He believes Marks and Spencer should be sourcing their meat locally.

"This is lamb that's flown 12,000 miles and there's the best of Irish lamb available within 100 miles of this store, and farmers are losing money and going out of business rapidly."
