Pharmaceuticals giant GlaxoSmithKline unveiled better than expected first-quarter profits today despite increased US competition.

The drugs giant posted pre-tax profits of £2.14bn (€3.14bn) for the first three months of 2007, slightly below last year but ahead of analysts’ forecasts of £2.02bn (€2.96bn).
