BT in big switch off to cut costs

British telecoms giant BT today announced plans for a major campaign to reduce energy in a bid to cut costs by £110m (€162m).

The so-called BIG Switch Off will last for four years and involve almost 100,000 workers in a series of projects aimed at cutting back energy consumption.

The firm will urge its staff to switch off photocopiers, faxes, computer monitors and other non-essential equipment when not in use.

Bruce Stanford, BT’s environment officer said: “BT is serious about helping to tackle climate change and energy efficiency is one of the cornerstones on which that strategy has been built.

“If we can reduce costs in the process and help show BT people how they can also save energy and money at home – it’s a triple win.”
