Credit card companies face legal action over charges

The European Commission today threatened credit card companies with legal action if they fail to cut late payment charges and open up national markets to competition.

The move follows a warning from the UK's Office of Fair Trading last week that penalties levied on late payers should be halved and that other bank charges should come down.
